Why does a maths teacher build numerology calculators?
Because the arithmetic is genuinely interesting, and because almost nobody shows it. Numerology is digit reduction — take a number, add its digits, repeat — and that simple operation produces a surprisingly rich structure. Certain values are fixed points. Some birth dates behave differently depending on the order of operations. A small change in convention shifts the results for over a thousand dates per century. That is a nice piece of recreational number theory sitting underneath a subject most mathematicians never look at twice.
What frustrated me was the state of the calculators. I tried a dozen of them with my own birth date and got several different answers, none of which explained itself. Not one showed the working. In a maths classroom, an answer without working earns no marks, and I could not see why a website should be held to a lower standard than a fifteen-year-old.
So I built one that shows every step. That is the entire premise of this site.
What do I actually think about numerology?
I do not think numerology predicts anything, and I have never claimed otherwise on this site. There is no evidence that arithmetic on a birth date reveals personality or forecasts events, and I would not be doing my day job properly if I pretended there were.
What I think is that it is an interesting traditional system with a long history and a coherent internal logic, and that people are entitled to explore it without being lied to. Most numerology writing overstates itself considerably. This site tries to describe the tradition accurately — including where practitioners disagree with each other — and to be clear that a traditional association is not a fact about your future. My own numbers
Since I ask readers to enter their birth date, it seems only fair to publish mine. I was born on 27 June 1981.
June gives a month component of 6. The day 27 reduces to 9. The year 1981 adds to 19, then to 10, then to 1. Those three components total 6 + 9 + 1 = 16, which reduces to a Life Path of 7.
Two things happened on the way there. The year passed through 19, and the total passed through 16, and both are karmic debt numbers. So my chart carries two of them alongside a Life Path 7 — which, if I took it as literally as some sites would encourage, would be a fairly gloomy result. I take it as what it is: an arithmetic curiosity about the date I happened to be born, and quite a good demonstration of why a calculator ought to show its working. How the site is written
Every page here is written by me, calculated with the engine described on the methodology page, and dated with both its original publication and its most recent revision. When I change a calculation rule, I go back and update the worked examples on every page that used the old one, because leaving stale arithmetic in place would be worse than not showing it at all.
If you find an error — in the maths, in a description of the tradition, or in anything else — please tell me. I would rather be corrected than consistent.
